Tracking Bets During The 2025 Cheltenham Festival

I’ve learned that success at the Cheltenham Festival isn’t just about picking winners; it’s about meticulously tracking every single bet I place. Over four frantic days and nearly 30 races, it’s incredibly easy to lose sight of my budget, my performance, and my overall strategy. For the 2025 Festival, my plan is more organised than ever, and it all revolves around a disciplined approach to tracking my wagers from the first race on Tuesday to the last on Friday.

My foundation is a dedicated betting log. I use a simple spreadsheet, but a physical notebook works just as well. Before the festival, I set it up with columns for the date, race, horse, type of bet (win, each-way, double, etc.), stake, odds, potential return, and the actual result. This creates a clear, at-a-glance record of my entire financial engagement with the meeting. It stops me from kidding myself about how I’m really doing.

I also use the tracking features within my betting apps, but I don’t rely on them exclusively. They are great for a quick check, but my personal log allows me to add context. I can make a note next to a losing bet: “Fell two out when travelling well,” or “Hated the ground.” This qualitative data is invaluable for reviewing my performance afterwards and understanding if my analysis was sound, or if I was just unlucky.

Another crucial reason I track my bets is for bankroll management. I set a firm total budget for the four days and divide it into a daily allowance. By logging every stake, I can see in real-time how much of my daily and overall budget I have left. This is my single most effective tool against chasing losses. When my daily budget is gone, I’m done for the day, no matter how tempting the next race might be.

Tracking is also essential for managing complex bets like multiples and ante-post wagers. I note down all my ante-post positions in a separate section of my log. This way, when the festival begins, I have a clear list of all my live tickets. For rolling multiples like a Placepot or an accumulator, I track which legs have won and what the potential payout is for the remaining selections. It turns a confusing web of bets into a clear, manageable strategy.

The real value, however, comes after the festival. Once the dust has settled, I sit down with my completed log and analyse it. I look for patterns. Did I have more success in novice chases than in handicaps? Was my each-way strategy profitable? Did I consistently overbet on short-priced favourites? This post-mortem is how I learn and improve for the following year.

For the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, tracking my bets will be non-negotiable. It transforms the event from a chaotic gambling spree into a strategic, managed campaign. It provides discipline in the heat of the moment and offers priceless data for the future. For me, the simple act of writing down each bet is what separates a hopeful punter from a prepared one, and it’s the best way to ensure I enjoy the festival responsibly while giving myself the best chance of finishing in the black.
