West Bromwich Albion take on Middlesbrough at the Hawthorns this afternoon.

West Bromwich Albion have won three of their last five league matches but they have not put together two consecutive wins in that period, losing the two in-between matches. By that definition, they should lose this game but the odds will favour them against a Middlesbrough team on the back of two straight defeats.

Valerian Ismael will have been happy with his team’s narrow 1-0 victory over struggling Hull City in the middle of the week, but he’ll be hoping to finally get back-to-back victories after recent inconsistencies.

However, he will have been happy with another clean sheet.

No team in the Championship has conceded fewer goals at home than West Brom (4) and defensive rigour is what Ismael prides his teams on, being the physical centre-back that he was in his playing days.

Boro had won three consecutive league matches before their recent two defeats to Birmingham City and Luton Town.

Manager Neil Warock has called for his team to be nastier in matches, after admitting frustration in the recent defeats.

The Tessiders are a long way from their days of challenging for the Premier League but they do have a good, honest manager at the helm. He needs a bit of investment and a bit of luck before they are pushing for higher pastures, though.

West Brom v Middlesbrough Match Team News

Semi Ajayi might come on for Kean Bryan, who is injured, and Connor Townsend might continue at left-wing-back

Matt Phillips might make way for Jordan Hugill as part of the standard rotation after playing three times in a week.

Boro could bring James Lea Siliki back into the team with Marcus Tavernier possibly missing out.

Warnock might switch to a back-three with Lee Peltier potentially due to be recalled. Anfernee Dijksteel might be the player making way.

West Brom v Middlesbrough Live Streaming Match Prediction

A problem for Warnock has been a lack of goals with their top-scorers, Andraz Sproar and Matt Crooks, only managing three goals each respectively.

Albion’s Karlan Grant is doing relatively well with eight Championship goals, averaging 0.61 per-match, while Callum Robinson has a respectable five assists to go with his three goals. The likes of Grant, Robinson and Matt Phillips are proven Championship performers and they can cause any team a lot of problems.

The Baggies aren’t free-scoring like Fulham but they have an efficiency about how they operate. They are unbeaten at home, winning six and drawing two, and Ismael’s team should be able to carry that momentum forward here.

Prediction: West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Middlesbrough
