The Black Cats of Sunderland are back in the second tier of English football as they kick off their Championship campaign against Coventry City at the Stadium of Light Stadium.

Its been a while coming but a League One playoff final win over Wycombe saw Alex Neil take their spot in the Championship.

Can they make another step up and reach the Premier League this season? They kick off with a home match against Coventry.

Sunderland had an impressive 16 match unbeaten run to close out their League One campaign last season; this includes the promotion playoffs, where they knocked out Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe.

However, Alex Neil’s men did not look too good in pre-season friendlies, with three losses in six games; they’ll hope for better results as they welcome Coventry to the Stadium of Light.

In contrast, Coventry had an impressive pre-season run; they played four pre-season friendlies, winning all four games.

The Sky Blues will look to extend their winning streak to five games as they go up against newly-promoted Sunderland; all eyes will be on Coventry striker Victor Gyökeres.

Sunderland v Coventry Tips : Coventry to win

Coventry have enjoyed a good run of form in recent weeks; they have won four games in a row, with no losses in their last five matches.

In contrast, Sunderland have struggled a bit recently; they suffered three losses in their last five games, with a win and a draw.

Furthermore, Coventry have had Sunderland’s number in the past; as they have no losses in their last seven clashes with Sunderland. All things considered, Coventry should take all three points from this match.

Sunderland v Coventry Tip 2 : BTTS no

We’ve mentioned that Coventry are coming off four consecutive wins; this is due, in part, to their solid defense.

The Sky Blues kept two clean sheets in those four games, conceding just two goals. It’s also worth noting that Sunderland are not exactly a high-scoring side; they registered four goals in their last five games, failing to score in two of those games.

Sunderland’s matches usually don’t feature goals at both ends; as one side did not score in five of their last seven games. Considering Coventry did not concede in their last two games, one of these teams should keep a clean sheet.

Sunderland v Coventry Tip 3: Under 2.5 goals

Sunderland and Coventry have faced off a lot of times, and those clashes have mostly been low-scoring games; in fact, seven of the last eight meetings have been a little devoid of goal mouth action.

We pointed out that Sunderland found the net four times in their last five games; because of their low-scoring nature, Sunderland’s games usually don’t feature plenty of goals.

Nine of Sunderland’s last 10 matches went below the 2.5 goal margin; and considering Coventry allowed just two goals in their last four games, we shouldn’t expect a lot of goals here.
