St James Palace Tips – Expert Verdict on Race
I don’t have a strong preference for this race, so my strategy is to either support the favorites or choose a few contenders from behind.
Chaldean stands out as a dual Group 1 and 2000 Guineas winner, although the form of that race has been weak. Most of Chaldean’s successes have been on softer ground, but he is underrated and continues to win.
2023 St James’s Palace Stakes Tips
Paddington, the Irish 2000 Guineas winner, also deserves respect, but he started in handicaps before progressing to listed company.
He benefited from a strong pace bias when ridden from the front, so he might employ a similar strategy again.
My first selection is Mostabshir, who finished behind Indestructible in the Craven Stakes but convincingly defeated Ziryab and the subsequent winner, New Business, by over five lengths.
Chaldean heads the betting
Trainer Gosden only enters horses in this race if they have a chance, as demonstrated by his previous wins with Palace Pier and Without Parole, both non-Guineas winners.
Another selection at double-figure odds is Isaac Shelby, who won the Greenham when Chaldean unseated at the start.
His timing and sectionals were impressive on that day, and he put up a strong fight in the Poulains, eventually being passed by Marhaba Ya Sanafi late in the race.
The form looks solid as the winner went on to finish third behind American Flag and Ace Impact. With Buick as the jockey, Isaac Shelby appears to be undervalued at double-figure odds.
Cicero’s Gift is also on the shortlist, but only if the odds are similar to the other two mentioned.
Although he has the potential for greatness, he still needs to prove himself and is currently too short.
What are the tips on the race?
Overall, I believe Mostabshir is the top pick, especially since I have already supported him before the race.
Depending on the weather conditions, I might also consider adding Isaac Shelby to my bets, taking advantage of the best odds guaranteed offer. Chaldean remains a strong contender, but the odds on him have become quite short.
If you’re looking for a long-shot option, you might want to consider Indestructible at 50/1. Although he had a disappointing run in the Guineas, he won impressively at the Newmarket open meeting just two weeks prior, with the Dante winner, The Foxes, being among the horses he defeated.
Selections: Mostabshir at 10/1 and Isaac Shelby at 8/1.
