Boris Johnson continues to lead the Conservative Party but with two key by elections coming and a potential plot by Tory Rebels in the pipeline the bookmakers have been quick to release their odds on who will be the next Tory Leader.

Next Conservative Leader

Despite winning a vote of no confidence 59% to 41% earlier this month, Boris Johnson’s future as the Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister looks perilous to say the least.

The British government had long been suspected of breaking the same COVID-19 lockdown rules which they had enforced themselves.

Once several leading media outlets as well Sue Gray’s report shockingly revealed the likes of Johnson, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and former journalist and politician Shaun Bailey had indeed broken the law on several occasions in the form of various gatherings and parties at Downing Street, in what has become dubbed “Partygate,” a vote of no confidence became increasingly inevitable.

Johnson has branded his victory as “extremely good” but it would be fair to say this is over-egging it somewhat. Only Iain Duncan Smith has received fewer votes in any previous Conservative vote of no confidence, with the likes of Theresa May, Margaret Thatcher and John Major all enjoying over 60%.

For now, Johnson is safe. The 57-year-old will undoubtedly reorganise his cabinet in accordance with whom he can trust in order to avoid being overthrown by a cabinet vote within the next 12 months.

Moreover, since winning the vote, Johnson has promised to reduce tax and build 300,000 houses per year in an attempt to increase his popularity with the public.

However, given the damage to his reputation among his own party – and indeed the wider public as a whole – it seems improbable to think he can continue into the next General Election campaign, which is currently scheduled to be in 2024.

But who are the main candidates to replace him as Conservative Party leader?

Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt, who serves as Chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee and was outspoken on Twitter in outlining why he would be voting against Johnson, is currently the bookmakers’ favourite at best-price 27/5 (SBK).

It’s logical that Johnson’s replacement would be someone who is publicly opposed to him. After finishing second behind Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election, Hunt declined an invitation to serve as Secretary of State for Defence.

The 55-year-old has a distinguished career in politics, having worked in Health and Social Care, Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, and Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport over the past 12 years.

Indeed, he received significant praise for overseeing the hugely successful 2012 London Olympics, while his stock has further grown as a result of his contribution to the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Could a woman follow in the footsteps of Thatcher and May to become Conservative Party leader?

Penny Mordaunt

The bookmakers appear to think this is highly possible, with Penny Mordaunt and Liz Truss next in the running at best-price 13/2 (QuinnBet) and 39/5 (SBK) respectively.

Mordaunt became Minister of State for Trade Policy in September 2021 having previously served as Paymaster General, Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary of State for International Development among other major ministerial roles.

She is a popular figure among the armed services, regularly calls for greater female representation in government, and is clearly opposed to Johnson’s leadership despite insisting “he has always had my loyalty.”

Liz Truss

Truss, meanwhile, is the current Foreign Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities having previously become the first female Lord Chancellor since 1253.

However, she was in support of Johnson’s leadership campaign and is considered a close ally, which could count against her should the Conservative Party wish to take a different direction.

Rishi Sunak

Likewise, Sunak’s previously high popularity among the public for his generous COVID-19 related policies – predominantly the furlough scheme which protected 80% of all employee’s wages – has taken a hit as a result of “Partygate” and it remains unclear whether he would put himself in the frame in any case.

The 42-year-old is best-price 10/1 (Sky Bet).

Some punters may be surprised to see Michael Gove as big as 25/1 (Betfred), but this is likely to be the bookmakers reacting to the 54-year-old announcing he would not put himself forward in the running in the event of a leadership campaign.

Gove infamously betrayed Johnson in the 2019 race before eventually losing out to him in second place.

“If you’ve been in politics for a little while, as I have been, then there are always mistakes that you can look back on,” Gove revealed this week, before declaring his support of the Prime Minister.

“But I think the prime minister is doing a good job.”

How many would agree with Gove is up for debate. Ultimately, though, Johnson’s position remains in place for now, and he is determined to continue.

“Absolutely nothing and no one … is going to stop us from getting on with delivering for the British people,” Johnson defiantly declared after winning the vote earlier this week.

As such, you may be best served holding onto your money for now in terms of backing his successor.

But if there’s a candidate to back, it is surely Hunt, who clearly remains determined to oust Johnson and replace him.
