The Saints are still looking for their opening win of the season, and despite a credible 1-1 draw with Manchester Utd in their last outing, a win tonight, albeit in the Carabao Cup would surely boost confidence amongst the South coast faithful.
Ralph Hasenhuttl side made a decent start in both their Premier League fixtures this season, taking the lead against Everton in the season opener however they later succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Goodison. Similarly, the Saints took the lead against Man Utd only for Mason Greenwood to level matters.
There are signs of life however for Saints fans, with Adam Armstrong impressing since his transfer from Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
Their opponents Newport have made a decent start to their League Two campaign, winning their opening games both by the scoreline of 0-1, and this will be their first home game of the season at Rodney Parade.
Newport boss Michael Flynn however will not be present on the touchline for this one after testing positive for Covid, but he will expect another famous Newport County Cup performance, which the side have managed to some effect in seasons gone by.
Team news is all important in the EFL Cup these days, but there’s no surprises in that Premier League Southampton are the favourites to progress to the next round, and can be backed at 4/11.
Those expecting a giant killing can grab 11/1 on the Newport home win, a price which may appeal to plenty considering the cup exploits of the Welsh side in past seasons.
