City head into the clash on the back of a confidence-boosting 3-0 derby victory over Manchester United on Sunday, a result that eased pressure after two defeats in their opening three Premier League games.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been formidable at home in Europe, unbeaten in their last 21 Champions League group or league phase matches at the Etihad.

Their overall record against Italian opposition at home is also strong, with just one defeat in nine fixtures. However, they did open last season’s campaign with a goalless draw against Inter Milan at the Etihad and were also held by Feyenoord, highlighting that these occasions can be tricky.

Napoli, meanwhile, have hit the ground running under Antonio Conte, winning each of their first three Serie A matches and conceding just once.

Their latest outing was a 3-1 away victory over Fiorentina, underlining their credentials as serious contenders both domestically and in Europe.

The Partenopei have struggled historically in England, failing to win any of their 10 away games in the country in UEFA competition (D3, L7).

Conte’s side do have a good record on Matchday 1, losing just once in their last eight opening fixtures in the competition.

These two sides have met four times before in the Champions League, with both teams scoring in each of those contests.
