Torquay United are coming off a surprising 6:1 win over Aldershot Town.
That win was particularly impressive because they’ve been the worst team in the National League this season.
As a matter of fact, Torquay are last on the National League table; they’ve won just three of 17 league matches so far, with four draws and 10 losses.
The pressure is definitely off the lower league club and as Torquay defender Dean Moxey comments:
“We can go out and enjoy it, and there’s no real pressure on us. We are massive underdogs, so it’s a chance to go out and try and put on our best game.”
Torquay look to be in confident mood as Moxey continues:
“If we play like we did on Tuesday against Aldershot we’ll get chances and maybe cause an upset, but Derby are a good team and it’s going to be tough”
It’s worth mentioning that Torquay United defeated Hampton & Richmond Borough over two legs in the previous qualifying round of this tournament.
In order to reach the second round of the FA Cup, they’ll need to overcome their toughest challenge yet: League One outfit Derby County.
With that in mind, can Gary Johnson’s men pull off their biggest win of the season today?
On the other hand, Derby County played out a 1:1 draw at Morecambe in their midweek fixture; they had many opportunities to win, but couldn’t convert from the spot twice.
It’s noteworthy that the Rams have had their fair share of struggles in recent weeks; they’ve won just one of their last five matches, with two draws and two losses. On top of that, Derby County failed to score in two of their last four games.
Unlike today’s opponents however, Paul Warne’s men didn’t need to go through the qualifying rounds; as they ply their trade in League One, two tiers above Torquay United.
Torquay’s manager Gary Johnson is hoping home support can make a difference.
“Our supporters are very good at home. If we get a goal up, or they see that their team is in the game, they can be that extra man for us. “
Considering the disparity between these teams, Derby County will fancy their chances of advancing to the second round of this tournament.
We would like to point out that Torquay United have not been very good at keeping the goals out; as they have seen their defense breached in all of their last 17 matches in all competitions.
In fact, Gary Johnson’s men conceded nine times in their last four games alone.
Because of the way they concede, Torquay have seen at least three goals scored in five of their last six games, with four of those matches going over 3.5.
Bearing in mind that Derby County play in a superior division, this will likely be a one-sided contest; and at 8/15 odds, we are predicting over 2.5 goals in this match.
