Inter Milan ‘in the lead’ to sign out-of-favour Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud
Inter Milan are frontrunners to sign out-of-favour Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud despite interest from top European clubs such as Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid.
The French international has fallen behind in the pecking order as Frank Lampard has decided to favour the youthfulness of Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi instead of the experience that the 33-year-old offers.
Therefore, Giroud has only started three times in all competitions and has only been able to find the net once- against Liverpool in their UEFA Super Cup loss.
With Chelsea‘s transfer ban lifted and Lampard reportedly in search of a new striker in the market, opportunities for Giroud look even slimmer.
Thus, the former Arsenal striker has been on the lookout for an offer to allow him to depart Stamford Bridge throughout the season.
Last season, Giroud was the top scorer for the Blues in the Europa League as he helped fire Chelsea to their first European trophy since their unbelievable 2012 Champions League win.
Despite being on the other side of 30, Giroud still has some admirers, most notably his former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte who manages Inter Milan.
The fiery Italian signed the World Cup winner from the Gunners for £18m in 2018 and is keen to manage the target man once again.
Odds of Olivier Giroud’s Next Club
17/10- Inter Milan
11/2- Borussia Dortmund
12/1- Everton
12/1- AC Milan
12/1- West Ham
The Nerazzurri have had a bittersweet season so far under the former Juventus manager as Inter currently lead the Serie A, sitting two points ahead of reigning champions Juventus.
However, Inter failed to impress in the Champions League as Conte’s sides often falter in cup competitions. Inter Milan finished third in their group stages following a 2-1 loss to an under-strength Barcelona despite arguably being the best team in the group.
Striker Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez linked up brilliantly in Inter’s goal against Barca but they both misfired throughout the game and with Inter heavily reliant on them both for goals, Conte’s side’s fate was sealed.
Borussia Dortmund were the team to benefit from Inter’s misfortune and die Schwarzgelben are also in for Giroud.
Lucien Favre’s side only have one main striker in Paco Alcacer who has been in scintillating form for them since his move from Barcelona but he has become quite injury-prone for Dortmund.
Atletico Madrid are also looking for a back-up striker as both of their strikers, who are former Chelsea players, Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa have not hit double figures for Diego Simeone’s side.
