Villa, on the other hand, got off to a winning start. Defender Ezri Konsa netted the only goal of the game in the victory over Sheffield United.
The Villains will be buoyed by their positive start to the season, but they will also be spurred on by revenge.
They were not only knocked out of the FA Cup third round by Fulham in January, but more importantly missed out on promotion to the top-flight back in 2018, when Tom Cairney broke Villa hearts in the play-off final at Wembley.
The two clubs go head to head once more on Monday evening, with Craven Cottage hosting the grudge match this time around.
A home win can be backed at 15/8, with Smith’s men available at 8/5.
They’ve met four times in the past three years, but a draw is yet to take place between the sides. A rare draw has been given odds of 12/5.

Villa full-backs Matt Targett and Matty Cash both received bookings in the victory against Sheffield United, and they could be in for another tough time with Ivan Cavaleiro and Neeskens Kebano on the Fulham wings.
Both Targett and Cash can be backed at 18/1 to pick up the first yellow on Monday.
But Fulham’s Aleksandr Mitrovic won’t be far from the action all over the pitch. The Serbian loves getting stuck in, and could find himself in a longstanding battle with Tyrone Mings.
The striker is 11/1 to pick up the game’s first yellow card, with the defender available at 16/1.

Mitrovic does, however, know where the net is. The number nine already has two league goals this season.
He’s currently 17/4 to net first against Villa.
Smith has strengthened his attacking options in the latest window. New arrival Ollie Watkins already has two League Cup goals for his new side, but he is yet to get off the mark in the top-flight.
Watkins is currently 6/1 to score first, and 2/1 to score anytime.
