Antonio Conte’s men were enjoying a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions, but that came to an end on Tuesday night. It was Juventus who spoiled the party, winning 2-1 in Tuesday’s Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.
The two clubs face off in the second leg next Tuesday, but Inter have an important league fixture to look forward to first. Their upcoming opponents sit 11th in the current league standings, with just five wins to their name this season.
The hosts have just two victories in their last five matches in all competitions. They’ve lost two of those, drawing the other. And one of those losses came against Inter in the Coppa Italia round of 16.
Stadia Artemio Franchi was the venue for last month’s meeting, with the visitors coming out on top 2-1. But as wasn’t as straightforward as Conte would have wanted. The travelling side needed extra-time to clinch the victory.
Arturo Vidal netted from the penalty spot five minutes before the halfway stage, with Christian Kouame levelling the scores on the hour mark. But former Manchester United man Romelu Lukaku netted in the dying seconds of extra-time to clinch the 2-1 win and break Fiorentina hearts.
Given recent form and indeed current league standings, Inter are unsurprisingly available at 3/5 to win on Friday night. A home victory can be backed at 28/5.
And a draw is currently 17/5.
The hosts will, however, be comforted in knowing that the game arrives at a crucial time in Inter’s season. The aforementioned cup meeting with Juve will certainly be on their minds, with Conte perhaps expected to play a weakened side on Friday.
A host of non-regulars look set to be included for another reason, with Inter scheduled to play Lazio and AC Milan in the matchdays that follow.
Milan sit two points ahead of their fierce rivals at the top of Serie A, so that encounter later this month could be crucial in determining the final league standings.
