Copa del Rey winner: Who will ‘win Spanish Cup’ this season?

Published

on

Just four teams remain in this season’s Copa del Rey. It’s now Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, Granada and Mirandes who are all battling it out for the famous trophy.

Established in 1903, the Campeonato de España–Copa de Su Majestad el Rey, commonly known as Copa del Rey, is Spain’s equivalent of England’s FA Cup.

Valencia have most recently put an end to Barcelona’s dominance in the prestigious tournament. They beat the Catalan side last year, denying Barca the trophy for a fifth successive season.

The Spanish giants have won the competition a record 30 times. Bilbao are their nearest rivals on 23. Real Madrid boast 19 titles, with their city rivals Atletico on 10.

But the big guns have certainly not been at their best in the Copa del Rey this time around. Their poor displays leaves Granada, Bilbao, Mirandes and Real Sociedad as the four remaining contestants.

Granada have already knocked out one of Spain’s top sides, when they beat Valencia 2-1 in the quarter-final. Striker Roberto Soldado bagged a brace – including a 94th minute penalty – against his old club to send his current side into the semi-finals.

But they now face an uphill task. Granada lost 1-0 to fellow La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the semi-final. They do now, however, have a home fixture as they attempt to overcome the narrow deficit.

But their opponents will be no pushovers, and will look to see out the second leg with relative ease. Despite requiring penalties to edge past Elche and Tenerife in the round of 32 and round of 16 respectively, Bilbao then overcame Barcelona 1-0 in the quarter-final of the competition.

In the other semi-final, it was Real Sociedad who came out on top. They beat second division side Mirandes 2-1, with Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard scoring their winner on the night.

They have also had an exciting run to this stage of the competition, culminating in their quarter-final victory over Zinedine Zidane’s side. Odegaard was once again on the scoresheet that day, netting the opener in a stunning seven-goal thriller.

His team ran out 4-3 winners, and they will be looking to go all the way in the famous tournament this season.

It’s currently 11/10 for Real Sociedad to lift this year’s Copa del Rey trophy.

Bilbao are available at 15/8, with Granada currently 11/1 to clinch success. And Mirandes have been given odds of 16/1 to upset the status quo and win the tournament.

The semi-final second legs take place on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th March, with the final then coming on May 25.
