It’s undoubtedly a more significant meeting than most friendlies, with the government using the fixture as a trial to allow fans inside the stadium amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Season-ticket holders and some club members at the Amex will be among those allowed to attend, with a total of 2,500 tickets available for the game. Several safety measures are set to be in place, including masks and social distancing.
On the pitch, it’s certainly an interesting fixture for the visitors. Frank Lampard’s new-look Chelsea will finally have the opportunity to show the world what they are made of. New signings Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Thiago Silva could all potentially feature.
The club ended their season on a low, with losses to Arsenal and Bayern Munich in the FA Cup final and Champions League last 16.
Brighton, meanwhile, finished the league campaign off strongly, remaining unbeaten in their final three league matches. That included draws with Southampton and Newcastle, before a final day 2-1 win at Burnley.
The Seagulls have also been making headlines in the summer transfer window. They’ve tied down captain Lewis Dunk to a new five-year contract, and have announced that they won’t be selling defender Ben White to Leeds.
The club have, however, allowed midfielder Aaron Mooy to leave. The Australian has joined Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG.
Saturday’s fixture presents the perfect opportunity for both clubs to step up their preparations ahead of the new season. Incidentally, the sides will also meet in the opening weekend of action, with the Blues travelling to the south coast to face Brighton on September 14th.
